Are You a Candidate for Labia Reduction?

Labia reduction (also known as labiaplasty) is the most common vaginal rejuvenation procedure, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). It’s a surgical procedure that shortens and reshapes the labia. Our award-winning, board-certified plastic surgeon Kirit Bhatt, MD, and the cosmetic surgery team at Rejuve Plastic Surgery offer a range of surgical and nonsurgical procedures for men and women at our office in McLean, Virginia.

Why labia reduction?

Women decide to invest in vaginal rejuvenation procedures like a labia reduction for a number of reasons. Many women experience painful and uncomfortable symptoms due to the size and shape of the labial tissue, which can interfere with regular activities like riding a bike, having sex, or, in some cases, even sitting comfortably. Vaginal rejuvenation is also available to improve the cosmetic appearance of the labia, or to tighten and firm up vaginal tissue.

According to ASPS data, the number of women undergoing labiaplasty has increased by almost 40% in recent years.

How does labia reduction work?

The vulva (outer portion of the female genital region) consists of two sets of “lips” known as the labia minora and the labia majora. The labia minora is the inner portion and is typically covered by the “outer lips” of the labia majora. When the labia minora tissue is too long, it can lead to discomfort or self-consciousness. During a labia reduction procedure, Dr. Bhatt trims the labia minora tissue so that it rests neatly inside the folds of the labia majora.

The procedure can be performed under general or local anesthesia, and the recovery period can last from a few weeks to several months. You can expect to take off several days to a week from work, but every woman is different.

The most common reaction after labia reduction surgery is swelling of the labia minora and labia majora, which requires icing. Dr. Bhatt may also prescribe pain medication for the recovery period. Women can resume regular sexual activity within 4-6 weeks in most cases.

Is labia reduction and vaginal rejuvenation right for you?

The decision to invest in labia reduction surgery and vaginal rejuvenation is personal and unique to each woman. If the length of the labia minora tissue is causing you discomfort or other symptoms, our plastic surgery team can help. You can expect discreet and compassionate care from Dr. Bhatt and our team.
