Liposuction Has Come a Long Way: Find Out What's New

Most people have heard of liposuction because it’s been around for more than 40 years and is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures in the United States. Thankfully, the procedure has improved through the years and it’s now easier, faster, and safer to get the results you want.

Board-certified plastic surgeon Kirit Bhatt, MD offers the latest liposuction techniques to our discerning clientele in the metro Washington D.C. area at Rejuve Plastic Surgery in McLean, Virginia. He delivers superior results and never sacrifices patient safety. You’re in good hands with Dr. Bhatt.

Traditional liposuction

Liposuction uses suction to remove fat from different areas of the body, like the abdomen, back, legs, and arms. In traditional liposuction, one or more half-inch incisions were made into the target area, and a large tube called a cannula was inserted under the skin. A doctor would use a repeated jabbing motion to loosen up fat cells that were sucked out of the tube.

This was done under general anesthesia, like a major surgery, and came with the risk of complications, like bleeding and infection. Afterward, people were bruised and in pain, and they had to stay home from work for a while and wear a compression garment for six weeks or more. They also couldn’t exercise for weeks or longer, depending on their recovery. Sometimes, the procedure didn’t go as planned and people were left with ridges and bumps instead of a smooth physique.

New-and-improved liposuction techniques

Thankfully, times have changed and liposuction is much less invasive, much safer, and has less downtime. In our office, we offer tumescent liposuction and high-definition liposuction. With these techniques, there is less bruising, less chance of complications, and better results.

Tumescent liposuction

With this technique, a solution is injected into the target area that simultaneously numbs it, constricts blood flow, and causes it to swell. This makes it much easier to suck out the fat than with traditional liposuction. The anesthetic will wear off after about 24 hours, but the pain is minimal and is managed with an over-the-counter pain reliever like Tylenol. You’ll bleed and bruise less, and will be awake the whole time. Your recovery will be much faster too.

High-definition liposuction

This method removes fat cells and also contours, or shapes, your body through the use of high-intensity ultrasound. This is usually done under general anesthesia and has a longer recovery time. But, the results are superior and it's much safer than traditional liposuction.

Considerations

No matter what type of liposuction you choose, it’s important to remember to eat healthy and exercise. This is because you will still have fat cells in other areas of your body. If you live an unhealthy lifestyle, these fat cells will grow too.
