Why Male Breast Reduction is More Popular Than Ever

Have you heard about the latest cosmetic surgery to experience a surge in popularity? Your brain may jump to America’s most popular cosmetic procedure, breast augmentation. You wouldn’t be wrong, either. Augmentation trounces the competition with over 300,000 procedures performed per year.

But breast reductions for men, scientifically called reduction mammaplasty, are on the rise. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, over 24,000 men underwent this procedure in 2018. That’s an increase of over 22% since 2000.

Several factors, including fewer stigmas, are associated with the rise in male breast reduction surgeries. Another key factor is the surgery’s ability to boost confidence and self-esteem on an outpatient basis.

Understanding gynecomastia

Gynecomastia is a condition in which glandular tissue in the breasts becomes enlarged due to hormonal changes. Although similar in appearance to the fat deposits of overweight men, gynecomastia is its own separate condition.

recent study conducted by doctors at UCLA and the University of Washington found that up 70% of boys in early to mid-puberty experience gynecomastia — the condition is also common in middle-aged men. Overall, about 65% of men experience gynecomastia at some point in life. In many cases, the condition will subside after hormone levels return to normal.

Good candidates for male breast reduction

Overweight men are typically not good candidates as traditional weight loss methods are a less invasive way to resolve gynecomastia in such cases. Ideal candidates are healthy and close to their ideal weight who, despite exercise and a good diet, have overdeveloped or enlarged breasts.

What happens during a gynecomastia procedure?

The reduction is an outpatient procedure that is performed under local anesthetic and IV sedation. The surgery involves two main components: liposuction to remove fatty tissue and excision to detach any glandular fibrous breast tissue beneath the areola. The combination eliminates fat and disconnects fibers that may be causing outward appearance of the breasts.

Most surgeries take between an hour and a half to two hours. Because the incisions are small, it adds to the procedure’s popularity.

After a male breast reduction procedure

You’ll get to go home on the day of the surgery and will wear a compression vest for a few weeks. Don’t worry, the vest can be obscured by clothing and helps reduce post-surgery swelling. Most patients only deal with mild pain, swelling and bruising and can return to work within a week. The incisions are typically fully healed four weeks post-surgery and you’ll be able to resume strenuous activities at around the same time.

If you continue to practice good dietary habits and exercise, the results of the surgery will be permanent. Just keep in mind future weight gain can spur the re-accumulation of breast tissue.

You can eliminate your enlarged breast tissue and boost your self-esteem with a male breast reduction. Dr. Bhatt will make sure you receive the best care and results possible. Call or request an appointment at our McLean, Virginia, office today.
