Breast Augmentation Q & A
Who should consider breast augmentation?
If you desire larger, perkier breasts, augmentation may be the best option for you. Breast augmentation can also balance out unevenly sized breasts or restore the appearance of breasts that have lost shape and fullness due to the natural aging process and childbirth.
Dr. Bhatt offers silicone or saline implants, and you may also consider augmentation with fat transplantation. This procedures involves harvesting fat from other parts of your body and injecting it into the breasts. Fat augmentation leads to a less dramatic increase in breast size with a natural look and feel. He can discuss with you the advantages and risks associated with each to help you determine which is best for your aesthetic goals and lifestyle.
What should I expect during breast augmentation?
Dr. Bhatt places you under IV sedation or general anesthesia to make you sleep and feel comfortable. He makes an incision in one of several places, depending on what you agreed upon prior to surgery. The options include in the crease beneath the breast and through the apex of the armpit. The implant is placed underneath the existing breast tissue or behind the chest muscle. Dr. Bhatt discusses each option with you prior to surgery.
In the immediate recovery period, you’ll wear a specialized bra to promote healing of your pectoral muscles.
Following breast augmentation, expect at least four weeks of recovery where you need to refrain from vigorous exercise. You can return to a sedentary job after about one week.
What is a breast lift?
If you have sagging breasts due to aging, pregnancy and breastfeeding, or weight loss, you may be a candidate for a breast lift.
A breast lift removes sagging skin and restores the overall firmness and height of your breasts. Usually, a breast lift can be performed under mild sedation.
If you have large breasts that make you feel self-conscious about your appearance or that cause neck and back pain, a breast reduction may be for you. During the procedure, Dr. Bhatt removes fat and glandular tissue from the breast while tightening skin to produce smaller breasts that are more comfortable and in better proportion with the rest of your body.
Women who have developmental abnormalities or have lost one or both breasts due to mastectomy are good candidates for breast reconstruction. With breast reconstruction, Dr. Bhatt aims to create a breast and nipple that resembles the natural breast as closely as possible in terms of shape, size, and position.
If you’re healthy, you can undergo breast reconstruction at any age.
