Tummy Tuck Q & A

Who is a candidate for a tummy tuck?

Good candidates for abdominoplasty are people who are physically healthy but have pockets of fat or loose skin that just won’t respond to diet and exercise. If you’re slightly overweight, you may also benefit from a tummy tuck if your skin has lost some of its elasticity. Women who have skin and muscle that have been stretched due to pregnancy can also benefit. Dr. Bhatt gives you a comprehensive physical exam and reviews your aesthetic goals when determining if a tummy tuck is right for you.

If you plan on losing significant weight or having more children, you should hold off on a tummy tuck for now, however.

What should I expect during a tummy tuck?

An abdominoplasty is performed while you’re under general anesthesia. The whole procedure takes two to five hours.

During the procedure, Dr. Bhatt makes two incisions: one from hip bone to hip bone, close to the pubic area, and another around your navel. The skin is separated from the abdominal muscles. The muscles are pulled together and stitched to create a firmer abdomen and narrower waist. The flap of skin is stretched down over your newly tightened muscles. Dr. Bhatt removes any excess skin and repositions your navel. All incisions are closed and the surgical site dressed.

What is recovery like following a tummy tuck?

You usually stay overnight in the hospital following a tummy tuck. Immediately after the surgery, you may have a temporary tube inserted at the surgical site to drain excess fluid.

Recovery time ranges from two weeks to two months. You’ll have some physical restrictions for up to six weeks to allow your abdominal muscles to heal. Dr. Bhatt lets you know when you can return to a full activity schedule.

Your scar spans the lower abdomen from hip to hip, but is easily concealed by a bikini. To maintain your long-term results, you’ll benefit from a healthy diet and regular exercise that prevents notable weight gain.
